Dr. Ioana Lemnaru, a GP at Dr Fox Online Pharmacy, and the charity Breast Cancer Now are highlighting less commonly recognized symptoms of breast cancer, moving beyond the well-known presence of a lump. This effort aims to improve early detection by encouraging individuals to become more 'breast aware' of diverse potential indicators.
Key symptoms to watch for include changes in skin texture such as dimpling, puckering, or an 'orange peel' appearance, alongside redness or rashes on the breast. Nipple changes are also crucial, encompassing inversion, crusting, discharge, itching, or alterations in position or shape. Further signs include swelling or a lump in the armpit or around the collarbone, changes in overall breast size or shape, and persistent pain in the breast or armpit area.
While Dr. Lemnaru notes that approximately '9 out of 10 breast changes are not cancer,' she emphasizes that prompt consultation with a GP for any new or persistent changes is vital. Early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes, underscoring the importance of regular self-checks and familiarity with one's normal breast characteristics.
