The Florida Department of Health (DOH) in Marion County, in collaboration with the Healthy Start Coalition of Marion County, announced it will provide free or low-cost breast cancer screenings and diagnostic services. These services are available year-round through the Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (BCCEDP), with a specific emphasis during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. This program is designed to assist women residing in Marion County, Florida.
The BCCEDP, which is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), aims to increase early detection and improve treatment outcomes for breast cancer among uninsured, underserved, and low-income women. To qualify for the screenings, women must typically be aged 50-64, uninsured, and meet federal poverty guidelines. However, women under 50 who are experiencing symptoms may also be eligible for the program. Laura O'Connor, Health Officer for DOH-Marion, stated, 'Early detection of breast cancer is important to improve treatment outcomes.'
A 'Lunch and Learn' event for Marion County residents is scheduled for October 18, from 12-1 PM, at the DOH-Marion office located at 1800 SE 17th St, Ocala, FL 34471. To register for this event, residents can call (352) 629-0137 x2026 or email HealthyStart@flhealth.gov. For eligibility inquiries and to schedule appointments for screening services, individuals should contact (352) 644-2622.
