Intermountain Health is deploying a mobile mammography unit across Utah to enhance access to breast cancer screenings for women who may otherwise face barriers to traditional clinic visits. This initiative aims to improve early detection rates by making preventative screenings more convenient and accessible. The mobile unit travels to various community locations, including workplaces, churches, schools, and local events.
The screening process on the mobile unit is efficient, typically taking about 15 minutes, and women can either schedule an appointment or utilize walk-in availability. Early detection through mammography is critical, as it can identify breast cancer two to three years before a lump is palpable, contributing to a 99% survival rate for localized breast cancer. Dr. Kristin Miller, Medical Director of Breast Imaging at Intermountain Health, stated, 'A mammogram can find cancer two to three years before you can feel a lump, and that's why we want to catch it early.'
Intermountain Health advises women over 40 to undergo annual mammograms, with earlier or more frequent screenings recommended for those with a family history of breast cancer. Most preventative mammograms are covered by Medicare and commercial insurance plans, addressing a common financial barrier to screening.
