Mathew Knowles, father of Beyoncé and Solange, publicly revealed his male breast cancer diagnosis on 'Good Morning America' in 2019, sharing his personal journey as a survivor and advocating for heightened awareness and early detection. He emphasized the critical importance of men recognizing potential symptoms, a demographic often less vigilant about breast health, and highlighted his family's history with the disease.
Knowles discovered his condition after repeatedly finding blood on his T-shirts, prompting him to seek medical attention. A series of diagnostic procedures, including mammograms, ultrasounds, and biopsies, confirmed the breast cancer diagnosis. Subsequent genetic testing revealed he carried the BRCA2 gene mutation, which significantly elevates the risk of developing breast and prostate cancer in men, as well as breast and ovarian cancer in women, leading to his surgical removal of the cancerous tissue.
Following his successful treatment, Knowles has committed to raising awareness about male breast cancer, specifically targeting Black men who face a higher risk and mortality rate. He actively encourages both men and women to perform regular self-exams, schedule routine medical check-ups, and consider genetic testing, especially if there's a family history of cancer. He stated, 'We need men to be more aware of taking care of their bodies,' advocating for proactive health measures to save lives through early detection.
