Clara Maass Medical Center, an RWJBarnabas Health facility, in partnership with the City of Newark and the New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII), celebrated the grand opening of its new state-of-the-art imaging facility at 505 South Orange Avenue in Newark, New Jersey, on May 24, 2024. The facility aims to provide comprehensive diagnostic imaging services, including the latest mammography technology, to improve early detection for various conditions, particularly focusing on underserved communities.
The new center offers a full range of imaging services, including MRI, CT, ultrasound, X-ray, and advanced mammography. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka emphasized the facility's role in delivering quality healthcare to all citizens, noting the specific need in Newark. Dr. Maryellen C. Gordon, Chair of Radiology at Clara Maass Medical Center, highlighted the urgency of early detection, citing national statistics that show Black women are 40% more likely to die from breast cancer than white women, often due to aggressive, advanced-stage diagnoses.
This strategic partnership is designed to overcome barriers to healthcare access, such as transportation and cost, for Newark residents. By bringing advanced imaging capabilities directly into the community, the facility seeks to reduce health disparities and improve health outcomes, especially for conditions like breast cancer where early detection significantly increases survival rates. The center represents a collaborative effort to ensure convenient and timely access to critical diagnostic services for the underserved population.
