The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) and Saskatchewan Cancer Agency (SCA), in collaboration with the Government of Saskatchewan, officially launched the province's second mobile mammography unit on April 2, 2024. This initiative aims to enhance access to breast cancer screening services, particularly for women residing in rural and remote communities across Saskatchewan who may encounter geographical barriers to healthcare.
The newly deployed unit is equipped with advanced 3D mammography technology and will travel to various communities to deliver convenient and accessible screenings. It complements the existing first mobile mammography unit, which has been operating since 2002 and has successfully performed over 130,000 screenings. The addition of this second unit is expected to significantly bolster the overall screening capacity and facilitate more frequent visits to previously underserved areas.
With both mobile units now fully operational, Saskatchewan's mobile mammography program is projected to conduct up to 20,000 mammograms annually. This expansion is designed to improve early detection rates, alleviate wait times, and ultimately contribute to better health outcomes for women aged 50-74, for whom biennial screening is recommended. The program underscores the province's commitment to ensuring accessible preventative healthcare throughout Saskatchewan.
