Six Degrees Africa launched 'Project Pink', a year-round breast cancer awareness campaign, on April 26, 2024, in Ghana. The initiative aims to combat the country's high breast cancer mortality rate, where 85% of diagnosed women die, primarily due to late diagnosis. This three-year plan seeks to educate, provide free screenings, and offer support to women across Ghana's 16 regions.
The campaign plans to reach 500,000 women with free screenings over three years, with an initial target of 50,000 women in its first year. Six Degrees Africa will achieve this by partnering with healthcare providers, non-governmental organizations, corporate entities, and community leaders. Dr. Patience A. Tetteh, CEO of Six Degrees Africa, emphasized the importance of community engagement and leveraging existing structures to effectively reach target populations through educational materials, media campaigns, and direct community outreach programs.
'Project Pink' seeks to fundamentally change perceptions and behaviors towards breast cancer, promoting early detection and access to care. It also aims to provide post-diagnosis support, including psychological and financial assistance. Six Degrees Africa highlighted its commitment to working closely with key stakeholders such as the Ghana Medical Association, Breast Care International, Ghana Health Service, and the Ministry of Health to ensure the campaign's success and address the critical public health challenge posed by breast cancer in Ghana.
