St. Louis doctors, including Dr. Timothy Eberlein, Director of the Siteman Cancer Center, are urging women to prioritize routine cancer screenings. This renewed emphasis follows recent health updates concerning high-profile White House officials, reminding the public about the importance of early detection for various cancers.
Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff announced on January 10 that Vice President Kamala Harris received a normal result from her annual mammogram. Additionally, Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra's breast cancer diagnosis in 2022 was noted. Dr. Eberlein highlighted that one in eight women will develop breast cancer and stressed the critical need for regular mammograms, particularly for women aged 40 and older, as early detection dramatically improves treatment outcomes.
Siteman Cancer Center recommends yearly mammograms beginning at age 40, or potentially earlier for individuals with a family history of breast cancer. Early detection through screenings can lead to a five-year survival rate of 99% for breast cancer, a stark contrast to about 29% if the cancer is discovered at later, metastatic stages.
