Doctors and Cancer Research UK are warning women about less common symptoms of breast cancer, urging them to be vigilant for changes beyond just lumps. The awareness campaign emphasizes that early detection is crucial for more successful treatment outcomes, especially given that 1 in 7 women in the UK will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, with over 55,000 cases diagnosed annually.
Key symptoms highlighted include changes to the nipple such as inversion, rashes, or discharge, as well as skin changes like dimpling or puckering. Other signs to look for are swelling in the armpit or around the collarbone, alterations in breast size or shape, persistent pain, and redness or rashes on the breast skin. Dr. Ashish Dutta, an aesthetic doctor, stressed the urgency: 'If there are any new or persistent changes to your breasts, nipples or armpit, you must seek medical advice as soon as possible.'
Women are advised to check their breasts regularly and familiarize themselves with what is normal for their own body. If any new or unusual changes are noticed, it is imperative to consult a GP without delay for further investigation and medical advice.
